Syria, being in good relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, may contribute to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, said President of Syria Bashar al-Assad at the briefing on results of negotiations with Ilham Aliyev in Baku.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev referred to the UN Security Council’s resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: “Azerbaijan is for Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement in compliance with norms and principles of the international law. UN SC has ratified 4 resolutions on this matter, stating that Azerbaijani lands should be liberated without preconditions. As for the Armenian statements on self-determination of the nations, I wish to note that Armenian people already constituted themselves. Armenia is an independent state,” he added.

It should be noted that the resolutions, Aliyev spoke of were adopted during the hot phase of the conflict and, among all, called Azerbaijan for cease-fire and an armistice treaty with Nagorno-Karabakh. However, Baku did not hurry to perform the resolutions citing them today as the ultimate truth, continued the war hoping to take over the initiative, but instead lost his lands one after another.

Speaking of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during his June visit to Armenia, the President of Syria outlined: “We are confident, that nation’s right for self-determination, respect forinternational resolutions and law, and will for dialogue are sufficient for peaceful settlement of all conflicts and crisis in the world.”
