Today, October 10, Armenia and Turkey will sign the Protocol on “Establishment of Diplomatic Relations” in Zurich, The Polish Тygodnik Powszechny weekly reports.

Protocols on “Development of Relations” initialed on August 31 will be signed four days later, just before the football match of Turkish and Armenian national teams in Bursa October 14. RA President Serzh Sarsyan will attend the event.

The weekly underlines that the second Protocol is of no less importance for Armenia than the first — as opening of the border (blocked since 1993) means Armenia’s getting out of the isolation and development of trade. The source predicts waves of criticism and controversies before the Protocols are signed. However, the two countries will be facing even more serious challenges once the documents are signed, among them the historic issue of mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915; the present-day issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is an Armenian enclave in Azeri’s territory that gained independence with ethnic Armenians’ assistance in 1990.
