The RA National Statistical Service reports that as of April 1, 2010, the country’s population reached 3,251,900 – an increase of 13,000 (0.4%) as compared with last year.
The urban-rural population ratio has hardly changed since last year. Armenia’s urban population constitutes 64%, with 34.4% residing in the capital.
The urban population’s share in the population growth was 8,300 (including 5,700 in capital), that of the rural population being 4,700. Apart from the birthrate factor (the indicator is higher in the rural areas), the traditional utflow of rural population to cities had its impact on the growth of urban population.
According to census conducted in 1989, after the 1988 disastrous earthquake in Spitak killed thousands of people, Armenia’s the resident population was 3,448,600 people. Thus the Armenian population has decreased by 200,000 over the past 20 years.
The indicators of the resident population rate include citizens leaving the country for seasonal work abroad.
