Georgian side hopes to reestablish military cooperation with Israel suspended after Georgia-Russia war. Russia demanded Israel to terminate arms trade to Georgia. The Georgian Foreign Ministry makes discreet comments on the matter, said Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Nalbandov at the briefing. He was in Israel a week ago and held a number of official meetings, Kavkaz press reports.
“It was stated clearly at the meetings that whenever the matter concerns bilateral relations, Israel is guided by own state interests and the second one,” Nalbandov said. Prior to August 2008 war, Georgia and Israel actively cooperated in military field. In past years, Georgia has purchased scout aircrafts from Israel and Israeli military experts aided in establishment of Georgian armed forces. In addition, Georgia should buy 16 tanks from Israel, however the agreement was wrecked by Russia’s interference.
