The revised Madrid principles are quite applicable for protracting the negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement for 10-15 more years, Andrei Areshev, Deputy Director of the Russian Strategic Culture Foundation, told NEWS.am.

“The ‘set’ of principles available on the White House official website is a merely formal compromise. The main drawback is the neglect of the third party to the conflict,” the expert said. He pointed out that Azerbaijani media have already made some interesting interpretations on the first Madrid Principle, which, if read carefully, does not provide for the return of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijani control, the matter is safety zone exceptionally.

“However, the principle providing the demilitarization of the conflict zone is unlikely to be acceptable to both Armenian sides. But the implementation of the first principle will be braked without this necessary precondition,” Areshev outlined. At that, he understands the predominantly negative response to the document in Nagorno-Karabakh. “The details of Nagorno-Karabakh future status are not indicated any way, whereas this is the ultimate cause of the conflict. No compromise on this issue has been or is reached, and the mediators’ all preceding activities have not sufficiently assisted this for both objective and subjective reasons,” Areshev concluded.
