YEREVAN. – Adoption of the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide by the French Parliament is an extremely important step for preventing and punishing the crime, Prosperous Armenia Party MP Naira Zohrabyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.

“I was sure that the French Parliament will ratify the bill banning denial of genocides in general. It is directed also to the denial of the Armenian genocide. I believe this a very important step for preventing and punishing genocides,” the MP stated.

“Turkey should not act with threats but realize that the truth will prevail sooner or later. Turkey is apt to become a member of the EU. It must have the authorities who will be strong enough to face the past.”

Zohrabyan thanked French MPs Francois Rochebloine, Rene Rouquet, and especially the author of the bill Valerie Boyer.

“I believe the Senate will also ratify the bill,” she concluded.

The French Parliament adopted the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide on Thursday. The law, in case of violation, intends a one year of imprisonment and a fine amounting to €45000. To note, Turkey threatened France with serious consequences before the adoption up to calling Turkish Ambassador to France back and breaking trade relations.
