The format of the interparliamentary commission for cooperation between the National Assembly of Armenia and the Federal Council of Russia is in demand and effective. Valentina Matvienko, speaker of the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, stated this at the aforesaid commission’s meeting in Yerevan on Friday

According to Matvienko, the work of this commission makes a great contribution to strengthening friendship between the two countries and peoples, and the Russian side attaches great importance to the development of interparliamentary cooperation.

Matvienko noted that today's meeting is special and significant, as it is held in the year of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism.

“About 600 thousand Armenians fought on the fronts. More than a hundred children of the Armenian people were awarded the title of Hero of the USSR," she recalled, especially mentioning Marshal Ivan (Hovhannes) Bagramyan.

In this connection, Matvienko especially noted the participation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and World War II veterans in the 80th anniversary celebrations held in Moscow in May.

Separately, Matvienko noted that Russia welcomes Armenia's interest in the parliamentary dimension of BRICS.

"Of course, nothing brings our countries and peoples closer together than the desire for people-to-people contact and friendship. And it must be said that citizens of Russia and Armenia voluntarily establish business, cultural and, simply, human ties," the Russian politician continued.

Also, she drew attention to the fact that Russian remains the most important language of interethnic communication between Armenians and Russians, and its communicative function cannot be underestimated.

"For many Armenians, Russian is not only a second language, but also a part of personal and family history," Valentina Matvienko added.

According to her, the holding of the aforementioned meeting today, on the Day of the Russian Language, is especially symbolic.
