Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Police Chief Jim McDonnell have declared a curfew in parts of the city center amid protests against the immigration service raids, BBC reports.

The curfew will be in effect from 8pm to 6am and will continue for several days.

Bass said the city had suffered significant damage, but the curfew only applies to a one-square-mile area. Residents and accredited media in that area will not be affected, she added.

In turn, the Los Angeles police chief said the curfew was necessary to save lives and protect property after days of unrest. Also, he said 27 people were arrested on Saturday, 40 on Sunday, 114 on Monday, and 197 on Tuesday.

In addition, Karen Bass called on President Donald Trump to stop the raids carried out by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) against illegal immigrants. The Los Angeles mayor added that she is trying to contact Trump to discuss the matter.
