The government of Turkey permitted the country’s Greek community to open a school on Gokceada Island.   

This decision by the government is very important for the Greeks in Turkey, because for a long time permission was not granted to open the Island’s Greek school, which was closed in 1964, Milliyet daily of Turkey informs.   

Although a mere 180-200 Greeks have remained on Gokceada Island, opening of the new school brings hope to the Greek community.  

In line with the 1936 data, 135 thousand Greeks used to live in Turkey, but their number has now reduced to approximately 2,500.
