Former worker of U.S. State Department (1977-2007) Walter Myers, 72, and his spouse Gwendolyn Myers, 71, accused of acting as illegal agents for Cuba and wire fraud admitted their guilt, BBC reports.

According to Mr. Myers, who had access to top secret documents in the course of his service, the couple was hooked by Cuban agent in 1981, and starting 1983 they got engaged in espionage, passing on information to Cuba.

BBC says that in 1995 the pair met with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro during a business trip to Island of Freedom.

Thus, under the court verdict Mr. Myers will be a lifer, whereas Mrs. Myers sentenced to 6-7.5 year’s imprisonment.
