Today, December 1 is World AIDs Day, observed each year. It was established by World Health Organization in 1988 to bring awareness to this pandemic that does not spare anyone despite age, race, gender, religious views or sexual orientation.

According to UN, over 36 million people got infected with this terrible disease and 2 million already died. Every month 7400 people are diagnosed with immunodeficiency viruses (HIV).

Under the report by Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDs, this disease is mostly spread in Western European countries and Central Asia- an estimated number of half million people live with AIDs.

The global theme for the 2009 World AIDs Day is “Universal Access and Human Rights” chosen by the World Aids Campaign.
