Marking the “end of the world,” or the end of the next cycle in the Mayan calendar, caused serious damage to several ancient architectural monuments of Tikal National Park in Guatemala. . 

Around 6,000 tourists climbed the Second Temple and the Southern Acropolis of Tikal on December 21, and this damaged their stairs and stones, the technical expert of the park stated noting that it will be impossible to restore them to their former form.  

The local authorities are not against such events, but they are calling upon people to be more careful in the future, RIA Novosti News Agency of Russia reports.
