Germany requested a mandate to extend control of its external borders, after it had received warnings from special services, that many terrorists enter the country under the guise of refugees, reports Der Spiegel.

Germany's Interior Ministry has established a border control on the border with Austria in the fall of 2015, due to the unprecedented flow of refugees. It means, that migrants should register upon arriving to the country, which does not allow them to move across the country. Germany followed the example of other countries in this case.

The steps directed to border control in Berlin are temporary. Their validity was extended several times; the last time it was in February 2017. Germany has requested the European Commission for a mandate to extend that timeframe.
