Prospecting for uranium in Kapan poses threat to security of Armenia and Karabakh, Heritage Party MP Zaruhi Postanjyan told NEWS.am.

“Syunik region is strategically important for Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Uranium is a strategic material as well. Government’s decision made without public discussion jeopardizes security of our two states,” she noted. She recalled that Azerbaijan repeatedly voices a problem of uniting Southern and Northern Azerbaijans, whereas Nakhchivan is located 6 km far from the village of Lernadzor where exploration is carried out.

Besides, Syunik region is bordering with Iran. “To remove population from a strategic territory means to destroy foundations of the state,” Postanjyan stressed supporting protest against uranium explorations held by Kapan citizens. “At the moment they are protesting against prospering for uranium, as works are dangerous for health and environment,” she added.

The MP stated that local authorities also oppose exploration works, noting that their interests coincided with the interests of people. Local authorities of Lernadzor and Kajaran villages, as well as the cities of Kapan and Kajaran have already issued statements opposing exploration works.

Last week a protest action against the ongoing prospecting for uranium was held in Kapan, city in south of Armenia.
