The oldest tree in the U.S. has been brought down in the state of New Jersey, Lenta reports, citing The Independent.

The white oak, not far from which first US President George Washington had a picnic, stood for 600 years, but consequently began to rot and died. Hundreds of people came to watch the cutting down of the tree.

To the joy of the local residents, a new tree has begun growing not far form the old oak and its acorn.
