YEREVAN. – There are already two de facto Kurdish states in the world, one of them is in the north of Iran and another in Syria, Armenian analyst Karen Hovhannisyan said.

“Starting from May, Syrian and Iraqi Kurds started formation of their own state. Interestingly, Turkey had quite good relations with Iraqi Kurdistan. At least, with its leadership,” the expert said.

However, relations between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan deteriorated considerably after the reports on independence referendum set for September. The first to react to the reports was not official Iraq, but Turkey headed by Erdogan.

Karen Hovhannisyan considers it is quite possible that Kurdish state or at least some unions could be established in the future. He cited the example of Hakkari province, which is located in the southeast of Turkey and borders with Iran and Iraq where an attempt had been made to create an independent Kurdish union from Turkey.

“As a punishment, the Turkish authorities tried not to pay salaries and pensions to people who lived in the area. The Turkish authorities managed to find, take control or completely isolate the leaders who organized and led the action in Hakkari,” the expert explained.
