The issue of Armenian refugees is decisive for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This is what President of the Assembly of Azerbaijani Armenians Grigori Ayvazyan declared during a scientific-practical conference entitled “Legitimacy of the Formation of the Republic of Artsakh from the Perspective of International Law” on 3 April.

According to him, this issue is an issue that is the least discussed during negotiations over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “Whereas Armenians were a titular nation in Azerbaijan, making up 12% of the whole population, Azerbaijanis were a national minority in Armenia. This is confirmed by the official documents of the former USSR,” he stated.

Ayvazyan added that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not a territorial dispute for Armenians, as Azerbaijan tries to present it. “For Armenians, it is a war for survival,” he clarified, recalling the annihilation of Armenians in Sumgait, Kirovabad and Baku.
