About 3,000 people were believed to have contracted the coronavirus during the opening ceremony of the Hagia Sophia as a mosque on July 24, Ahval reported referring to the Turkish health expert and associate professor at Ankara University.

The presence of hundreds of asymptomatic patients at the reopening ceremony in July could lead to a major outbreak, the doctor said in an interview with Turkey's ANKA news agency.

The official opening ceremony of the Hagia Sophia as a mosque took place in Istanbul on July 24, which was attended by thousands of people.
