Flooding that has hit much of Malaysia in recent weeks has caused a total damage of around RM6.1 billion ($1.46 billion), Reuters reported.

Dozens of people have died and more than 120,000 people have been displaced after unusually heavy rain caused severe flooding in several states in mid-December and early January.

In a special report on the impact of the flood, the Department of Statistics said damage to government property and infrastructure amounted to RM2 billion and damage to residential buildings amounted to RM1.6 billion.

Production losses amounted to RM900 million, most of which was recorded in the central state of Selangor, one of the richest and most populous regions of the country surrounding the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The department also reported severe damage to vehicles, commercial premises and the agricultural sector.

The Malaysian government had previously said it would provide about RM1.4 billion ($334.37 million) in cash and other forms of aid to flood victims.
