Iran has never sought nuclear weapons, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, Mehr reported.

Speaking about Iran's peaceful nuclear program, Khamenei said that enemies are seeking to deprive Iranians of a peaceful atom.

“We are not pursuing nuclear weapons. We seek the peaceful use of nuclear energy,” Khamenei said in a speech broadcast live on state TV.

"They impose sanctions because of the nuclear energy that they know is peaceful. And whatever they may say about Iran being a certain amount of time away from producing a [nuclear] bomb is nonsensical and meaningless," he said.

Reiterating that Iran had never sought nuclear weapons, he said Iran sought to benefit from nuclear energy in a peaceful way. “They [the West] know that we are not seeking nuclear weapons,” he said.

"They know this. But they do not want the Iranian nation to achieve such outstanding scientific progress and that’s why they are pressuring us," Khamenei concluded.
