The Admiral Gorshkov frigate during the test launch of the hypersonic missile Zircon hit a sea target in the Barents Sea, reports RIA Novosti with reference to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Today, the lead frigate of Project 22350 Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov fired a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile at a sea target position in the White Sea from the Barents Sea,” the agency said.

The missile successfully hit a target located about a thousand kilometers away.

Zircon is the world's first hypersonic cruise missile capable of sustained aerodynamic flight with maneuvering in dense layers of the atmosphere, using its own engine thrust throughout the route.

The maximum speed reaches about nine speeds of sound (about 2.65 kilometers per second at an altitude of 20 kilometers, or more than ten thousand kilometers per hour). The maximum range is one thousand kilometers.
