Toyota said on Thursday it was recalling 2,700 of its first production electric cars for the global market because of the risk of wheel disconnection, Reuters reported.

The world's largest automaker by sales filed a recall notice for the bZ4X SUVs with Japan's Transportation Ministry. Of the 2,700 vehicles, 2,200 were destined for Europe, 260 for the United States, 20 for Canada and 110 for Japan, the company said.

Subaru Corp also said Thursday it was recalling about 2,600 units of the Solterra, its first all-electric car developed with Toyota, for the same reason.

Japan's safety regulator said sharp turns and sudden braking can cause a hub bolt to loosen, increasing the risk of a wheel coming off the car. However, it said it was not aware of any accidents caused by the defect.

The regulator advised drivers to stop operating the vehicle until more "permanent" measures can be taken to fix the defect.

All of the recalled cars in Japan have not yet been handed over to customers because they were intended for test drives and demonstrations, automakers' representatives said.
