The Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh is one of the main points of the negotiations. Russian political scientist Vadim Mukhanov told this to a press conference Wednesday.

According to him, the Russian peacekeepers arrived in the Karabakh conflict zone at the right time because if the situation was predicted at that time, it had a tendency to worsen.

He recalled that the idea of peacekeepers had arisen many times, but the conflicting parties had not supported it.

"Such proposals were made by the Russian side in the 1990s, the topic existed for several decades, but it did not receive support. At this moment, there is a steady interest in the presence of the Russian contingent, which performs a fairly wide range of tasks. Yes, questions are possible, we are aware of incidents that arise. But what is the alternative?" asked Mukhanov.

If the conflicting parties support and are interested in the continuation of the activities of these Russian peacekeepers, then, in his opinion, Russia is ready to bear the burden of the existence of a rather considerable contingent in the situation created in Karabakh.

"However, it will be related to the future development of the negotiation process," the Russian analyst added.
