The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry responded to the French Senate's resolution imposing sanctions on Baku with an angry tirade, accusing the French side of "provocation" and "undermining the process of normalization of relations."

"The resolution adopted by the French Senate on November 15, 2022, which is completely far from the truth, reflects false and slanderous statements and is open provocation, serves to undermine the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia," Azerbaijani MFA cited the statement as saying.

The statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry further stresses that "the resolution adopted by the Senate, having no legal force, vividly demonstrates a biased and one-sided political position of France, as a country which declared its intention to promote the peace process... The far-fetched claims mentioned in the resolution show that its authors are not aware of the historical facts and the current situation in the region."

"As for the absurd ideas about the so-called formation of 'Nagorno Karabakh', we once again remind the senators that the Karabakh region, which is internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, is an integral part of Azerbaijan, the rights and security of the Armenian population living in the region are an internal matter of Azerbaijan, and they will be ensured in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan. By encouraging revanchist forces in Armenia, the Senate resolution does not serve peace, stability and progress in the region and is far from "promoting lasting peace" mentioned in the title of the resolution," Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The resolution was adopted almost unanimously. It was voted for by 295 out of 296 senators.
