As of now, it is too early to talk about Armenians who want to move to Armenia due to the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria; the situation must stabilize. Hovhannes Aleksanyan, the Head of Strategy Development at the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs of Armenia, told this to a press conference Monday.

Aleksanyan emphasized that the Armenian citizens—in the quake-ravaged areas—who have lost their documents can receive a return document in one day through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

But the foreign nationals who have lost their documents need a certain document to get an exit permit from Turkey and Syria and reach the border of Armenia.

"At the moment, we have one public application from the Zambakciyan family; the family lost their house in Iskenderun region [of Turkey]. There were no other applications. The son of the Zambakciyan [family], Garabed, is an RA [(Republic of Armenia)] citizen, but his parents, Harutyun and Mari, are not; one is a citizen of Turkey and the other—of Syria, and they do not have documents at the moment. After the settlement of the situation, the applications or the cases of return will become clear," he said.

Aleksanyan added that the Armenian educational centers and churches in Syria—especially in Aleppo—were considerably affected by the earthquake.
