Global warming will lead to a mass mortality of biblical proportions caused by the rising level of the world's oceans. According to Deutsche Welle, this forecast was made by UN Secretary General António Guterres at a meeting of the UN Security Council, calling for changes in asylum legislation and international law to better protect those who may be affected by this catastrophe.

According to the U.N., low-lying coastal areas are now home to 900 million people on the planet, all of whom are at special risk. Entire countries could disappear forever, Guterres warned. As glaciers continue to melt, not only island nations will be at risk, but also countries such as Bangladesh, China, India and the Netherlands, he explained.

According to experts, the rising level of the world's oceans will be accompanied by increasingly frequent storms and floods. At the same time, the soil and water will be contaminated by salt, and many areas will become uninhabitable. According to UN climate experts, between 1900 and 2018 the level of the world's oceans rose by 15-25 centimeters. Under the scenario that in 2100, Earth's temperature will be two degrees higher than in the pre-industrial era, global ocean levels are expected to rise another 43 centimeters. With a temperature rise of 3-4 degrees Celsius, this could be up to 84 centimeters.

In early January 2023, the journal Science published a study according to which by 2100 at the current rate of global warming on Earth may disappear 68% of the glaciers.
