YEREVAN. – As compared with 2009, the number of suicides and suicide attempts in Armenia increased by 149 in 2011. In the case when 498 people had resorted to such measures in 2009, this number was 647 in the year past. Furthermore, the majority of Armenians who committed, or attempted to commit, suicide was men, the National Statistical Service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.       

In line with Service’s data, 56.7 percent of the suicides, or suicide attempts, was recorded among Armenia’s unemployed, and 16.5 percent among the pensioners.  

Also, 27.7 percent of such measures was carried out with the use of a sharp cutting, piercing, or other instrument; 24.6 percent with drugs or other material, 21.8 percent by hanging, 16.5 percent by jumping off from a high place, and 9.4 percent by other methods.   

And the overwhelming majority of the actual suicides in Armenia was committed by hanging, with 60 percent, followed by jumping off from a high place, with 20 percent.
