UN hopes that solution to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be found in the near future, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Antonius Broek said.
Asked how the UN can help in finding solution to the Karabakh conflict, Broek noted that the OSCE Minsk Group had been set up to seek solutions.
“So far that has not lead to what we really hoped for. From the UN perspective, we really hope that solution can be found very soon, and of course, key partners are helping conflicting countries to come to an agreement. The UN doesn’t have a mandate to make the discussion which is being held by the OSCE’s Minsk Group. Only dialogue is a solution and we don’t want any form of conflict again and I am confident that this is not a wish of the partners or any conflicting countries involved,” he said in an interview with APA agency.
He recalled that the UN helped in addressing the humanitarian issues and as soon as the agreement is reached, the UN will be immediately ready to work with the countries involved and the partners on the implementing of the programs for the humanitarian assistance.
“But I’d say more important is to assist in rebuilding life of people and fostering understanding and reconciliation among the people involved. I really hope that the solution can be found very soon for the benefit of anyone living in the region and especially to the people directly affected by the conflict.”
