Sherlock Holmes’s birthday was celebrated with great fanfare in Riga, the capital city of Latvia, reported RIA Novosti news agency of Russia.

The Riga streets were filled with true “gentlemen” and “ladies,” Holmes and Dr. Watson lookalikes as well as several other famous characters from the well-known novels by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

In 2012, Riga became the first city to decide to mark Sherlock Holmes’s birthday, and, since then, it is celebrated in the Latvian capital city every year.

Even though Doyle had not mentioned the exact “date of birth” of this main character of his novels, it is believed that Sherlock Holmes was “born” in January 1854.
