The main message of President Trump’s inaugural speech was ‘America first’.

Gunter Walzenbach, a senior lecturer at the University of the West of England, Bristol, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

In his words, this message is still open to interpretation despite its simplicity. “Earlier statements as President elect and previous campaign speeches have not added much clarity either to any of his long-term policy objectives or genuinely held political values. What has emerged instead is the picture of a ‘deal maker,’ whose past commercial successes and government of billionaires might significantly change the running of a large federal system with internal economic problems and complex foreign policy challenges. However, a country is not business; and the new President will have to learn this fast if he intends to make it through his first 100 days,” the expert stressed.

According to him, there is no easy comparison with any other President, perhaps apart from Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush.

“In the case of the former due to his role as a Washington outsider equipped with a pro-business, liberal agenda; and, in the case of the latter, due to the political influence of a small group of policy advisers nursing a radical, neo-conservative ideology. None of these partial similarities though will help in predicting the outcome of future engagements with other political leaders and, in particular, a much anticipated meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin,” Walzenbach noted.

It is quite unlikely that the conflict constellation in the Southern Caucasus will rank high in the policy briefings of the new US administration, he added. “Unfortunately, the principled perseverance this region would deserve to manage its complex security issues cannot said to be a guiding feature of Donald Trump’s political manoeuvring so far,” he concluded.
