YEREVAN.- Armenian diplomacy related to the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process resulted in failure, said head of central Hay Dat (Armenian Cause) office, member of ARF Dashnaktsutyun Giro Manoyan.

The failure is conditioned by the fact that both U.S. and EU linked normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations to the Karabakh issue.

“Meanwhile, previously U.S. and EU considered the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation a separate problem. At the moment the western powers believe resolution of the Karabakh conflict will create possibility for normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations,” said Manoyan.

Despite Armenian diplomats’ intention to settle relations without preconditions, it is clear that the process did not yield the anticipated results, he told journalists on Tuesday.

Asked by the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent what steps Armenian diplomacy should take to find the way out, Manoyan said: “The only solution is to withdraw signature from the Armenian-Turkish protocols to create new situation in normalization of bilateral ties. However,  at present Turkey is not interested in ratification of the protocols, as it got nothing it wanted to, at the same time giving nothing in return.”

Back in October 2009 Armenia and Turkey signed protocols in Zurich to normalize diplomatic relations between the states. The documents had to be ratified in both countries’ parliaments.

However, in 2010 the Armenian president suspended the process due to Turkey’s non-constructive stance. Ankara set preconditions and linked the reconciliation process to resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
