Europe must agree on a "massive defense" plan and invest more in domestic weapons production amid uncertainty, French President Emmanuel Macron said in response to questions from social media users.

Macron said Europeans are "concerned" by the resumption of talks between Russia and the US over Ukraine, as well as by the uncertainty over Washington's continued support for NATO, as the US demands that the EU contribute more to its security and is also developing plans to annex Greenland.

In addition, the French president said that Russia is allegedly taking aggressive actions against Europe and posing a threat to it.

“We need a 5- to 10-year strategy that we Europeans must do more to take the burden [of defending Europe] off the Americans and to be more autonomous,” Macron said. “This strategic awakening must lead us to decide on a massive defense plan and huge investments in Europe. And we must take these strategic decisions in the coming weeks, as well as to accelerate the development of the economy and technology because that is also a factor of our independence.”

The French president said that the matter is about investing more money in European defense companies and giving them priority in procurement.

Also, Macron advocated strengthening information security, increasing security on social media, and protecting against external interference with other European countries.
