The Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine on Tuesday passed—on the second attempt—the resolution "On supporting democracy in Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression," which states that the powers of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shall continue until the end of the current martial law in Ukraine.

The document passed by the necessary 226 out of 268 votes, informed MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

The resolution emphasizes that Zelenskyy was elected in free, transparent, democratic elections, therefore his mandate is not in question, as well as the need for him to fulfill his powers until a newly elected president of Ukraine takes office.

The Verkhovna Rada had failed to pass this resolution on the first attempt. Of the 272 MPs present at Monday’s session, only 218 supported it, and 54 others did not vote.
