US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would take steps to normalize relations and lift sanctions on Syria's new government to give the country “a chance for peace”,according to Associated Press.

Trump was scheduled to meet Wednesday in Saudi Arabia with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, a former rebel who led the overthrow of former leader Bashar al-Assad last year.

He said the rapprochement effort came at the urging of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“There's a new government that hopefully will succeed,” Trump said of Syria, adding, ”I wish you luck, Syria. Show us something special.”
