A commemoration event on the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Istanbul-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was held Thursday in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey.

Istanbul-Armenian attorney Selina Doğan, who is an MP from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), as well as several other deputies also were on hand at this event.

But police prevented those assembled from making statements, according to Evrensel newspaper of the country. The law enforcement solely permitted them to pay a silent tribute.

During the event, however, a participant stated something in connection with Dink, whereupon police demanded to stop the event.

Subsequently, those gathered continued this commemorative event at the hall of a union nearby, where they condemned the police actions.

In her remarks, Doğan said it is impermissible that this commemoration event was being prohibited for the reasoning that a state of emergency is in force in Turkey.

Hrant Dink was the founder and chief editor of Agos Armenian bilingual weekly of Istanbul. He was gunned down on January 19, 2007 in front of then office of Agos.

In 2011, the perpetrator, Ogün Samast, was sentenced by a juvenile court to 22 years and ten months for the murder.

After long court proceedings and appeals, however, a new probe was ultimately launched in the Hrant Dink murder case, and regarding numerous former and serving senior Turkish officials’ complicity in this assassination.
