Thai authorities refused to deport 18-year-old Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun to Saudi Arabia seeking passage to asylum in Australia after fleeing her family and renouncing Islam, the Guardian reported.
According to the girl, relatives threaten her with death.
Earlier, Thai authorities announced that they were deporting the girl amid visa issues. However, she has a visa for Australia, where she flew to seek political asylum. She did not plan to stop in Thailand, but a Saudi diplomat met her at airport in Bangkok.
In this case, the Saudi embassy in Bangkok said that the girl was stopped by the Thai authorities for breaking the law, and Saudi Arabia had nothing to do with it.
She has appealed for help from Europe, the US, Canada and Australia.
“I am Rahaf … I am in the hotel, I need a country to protect me as soon as possible. I am seeking asylum,” said Qunun. “My family is strict and locked me in a room for six months just for cutting my hair,” she said, adding that she was certain she would be imprisoned if sent back. “I’m sure, 100%, they will kill me as soon as I get out of the Saudi jail,” she said.
