India's most populous state will spend about $ 1.36 billion on COVID-19 vaccine. Uttar Pradesh state held preliminary talks this week with companies such as Pfizer and local partner of the Russian manufacturer Sputnik V.

The move is driven by many Indian states scaling back vaccinations due to severe vaccine shortages amid a record surge in coronavirus infections, with India registering more than 4,000 deaths for the second day in a row.

The state also ordered 10 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and another vaccine developed by a local government research agency.
