The matter of appointing Armenia’s ex-deputy PM Tigran Avinyan—a candidate for the mayor of Yerevan—as deputy mayor is not on the agenda of the next session of the Yerevan Council of Elders on September 13, but it is not ruled out that this matter will be put on the agenda. Lusine Gevorgyan, a member of the "My Step" Faction of the Council of Elders, told Armenian News-NEWS.am about this.

The municipal councilmember from the ruling majority added that Avinyan had met with all three factions of the Yerevan Council of Elders on Tuesday.

"Pre-election activities were discussed at the meeting," Gevorgyan noted, in particular.

Davit Khazhakyan, head of the opposition “Luys” Faction of the Yerevan Council of Elders, told Armenian News-NEWS.am that that the matter of Tigran Avinyan's appointment as deputy mayor is expected to be put on the agenda of the Yerevan city council in the next two days. Khazhakyan added, however, that the "Luys" Faction still does not have a single decision on voting for Avinyan's candidacy, but they will not vote against it.

And Mikayel Manrikyan, the head of the opposition "Prosperous Armenia" Faction of the Yerevan Council of Elders, said that there was no discussion in their faction yet regarding the vote for Tigran Avinyan's candidacy, this matter will be taken up with opposition Prosperous Armenia Party leader—and business tycoon—Gagik Tsarukyan, after which a decision will be made in this regard.

Yerevan currently has four deputy mayors.

The next elections of the Yerevan Council of Elders—which will then elect the new mayor—are slated for the fall of 2023.
