The meeting of the G20 trade and investment ministers on the Indonesian island of Bali, which is part of a series of ministerial meetings in preparation for the G20 summit in November, ended without reaching consensus and issuing a joint statement due to geopolitical problems related to the situation in Ukraine. The Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan, who chaired the event, told journalists at a press briefing at the end of the event. Indonesia is holding the rotating presidency of the G20 in 2022.

"Of the 27 paragraphs of the joint statement, 26 were agreed, one was not. The paragraph that was not agreed upon was about geopolitical issues. There was no consensus," said the minister, who was quoted by the Indonesian national news agency ANTARA.

According to the minister, the U.S., France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain did not support the Indonesian presidency's proposed wording for one of the paragraphs and offered their own, which included condemnation of what was happening in Ukraine.

"However, other countries did not agree with their wording, and as a result no consensus was reached," Zulkifli Hasan said.

Nevertheless, he continued, representatives from all the countries present at the meeting expressed deep gratitude to Indonesia, as this year's G20 chair, for undertaking the difficult task of chairing at a difficult time. "Leading the meeting was really difficult," the Indonesian minister concluded.
