The Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) produced by the Boeing Corporation will help Ukraine hit important military targets currently beyond the reach of the AFU.

The United States is preparing a $2.2 billion military aid package for Ukraine that is expected to include longer-range missiles and other munitions and weapons for the first time, two sources in the Joe Biden administration told Reuters on Tuesday.

The announcement of the new security aid package is expected as early as this week, officials said. The package is also expected to include support equipment for the Patriot air defense system, high-precision ammunition and Javelin anti-tank missiles, the sources added.

According to one source, the delivery will probably be funded by $1.725 billion from a fund known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which allows the Biden administration to order new weapons from manufacturers rather than taking them out of the Pentagon's existing inventory.

These funds will be used to purchase a new type of weapon - the land-based small diameter bomb (GLSDB), which has a range of 150 km. At the same time, Washington did not satisfy Kiev's request to supply ATACMS missiles with a range of 297 km.

The longer range of the GLSDB could allow Ukraine to hit important military targets that are currently out of range and help the AFU to continue counterattacks while making it difficult for the Russians to operate in their own rear.

GLSDB is jointly produced by Boeing Corporation and the Swedish company SAAB. The system consists of a GBU-39 small-diameter bomb (SDB) with an M26 rocket engine.

A description of the system published on the SAAB website says the GLSDB is controlled by the GPS global navigation system, is capable of eliminating some electronic interference, and can be used in all weather conditions and against armored vehicles.

The GBU-39 warhead is equipped with small folding wings that allow it to glide more than 100 km when dropped from an aircraft and hit targets up to 1 meter in diameter.

The White House declined to comment.
