As Watertown, South Dakota, welcomes US President Barack Obama on Friday, demonstrators for various causes hope to catch his eye.

Groups planning rallies around the president’s visit include people seeking recognition of the Armenian genocide, reported the local Argus Leader newspaper.

A group of people of Armenian descent plan to rally at the Watertown Regional Airport on Friday. They want to pressure the president to use the word “genocide” to describe the mass killing of the Armenians by Turkish forces one hundred years ago.

South Dakota has a sizable community of Armenian-Americans, some of whom are descendants of genocide survivors, said Jack Der Hagopian, a local attorney of Armenian descent.
