Trump Tower was guarded by some dozen police officers, a handful of them in Homeland Security bulletproof vests, surrounded by trucks and metal barricades. New York Police Department vehicles lined the block. All this security, designed to protect the president-elect, comes at a price, Bloomberg reported.

By the time he takes office, Donald Trump will have cost the city of New York up to $35 million, or about $500,000 a day, according to an estimate from the mayor’s office.

That sum might be an understatement: The City Council puts the figure at $1 million a day, which rounds out to roughly $70 million from the election to the inauguration. After Trump takes office on Jan. 20 and relocates to the White House, the cost of his security in Manhattan will change depending on whether the president is in his hometown or elsewhere, the mayor’s office said. Increased security at Trump Tower is expected be an ongoing expense no matter the president’s location, and this tool tallying the estimated expense to the city will be updated after the inauguration.

The bulk of this cost comes from the presence of the NYPD personnel around Trump’s namesake tower on Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th streets. This figure doesn’t include all the other agencies protecting the president-elect, including the Secret Service, federal intelligence agencies, private security, and the U.S. military.

Overall, the cost of protecting Trump is a drop in New York’s spending bucket. The executive budget for the next fiscal year comes in at $82.2 billion, meaning that even if protecting Trump costs $70 million, it’s still far less than 1 percent of operating expenses.
