YEREVAN. – The fifth international conference, entitled  “Women of South Caucasus for Peace and Security in the Region: Peace Starts from Your Home,” is held Thursday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

This year’s conference topic is the seeking of new ways of addressing modern challenges, and the stories of women peacemakers.

The objective of this event is to analyze the situation in conflict countries, especially the devastating effects which wars and conflicts have on women.

In his remarks at the conference, head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, underscored women’s engagement in this process. In his words, researchers have proved that domestic violence, unlike other types of violence, reduces at a slower pace, and that is why the EU attaches great importance to Armenia’s respective efforts, and it urges the country’s government to take more active respective steps. Also, he advised Armenia’s women to stand up for their rights, be leaders, and defend their rights.

British Ambassador Judith Margaret Farnworth, for her part, also highlighted women’s role in the establishment and maintenance of peace. She added that the UK embassy in Yerevan is ready to assist Armenia in women’s empowerment.

French Ambassador Jean-François Charpentier likewise stressed the importance of women during and after the resolution of armed conflicts.
