Donald Trump signed a memorandum, which allows mobilizing the National Guard for the U.S.-Mexico border, the White House said.
The White House statement was released after Trump met with Defense Secretary James Mattis, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other officials on border issues, Reuters reported.
The move provoked negative reaction in Mexico.
Preventing the penetration of illegal immigrants into the United States from the territory of Mexico was one of Trump's main campaign promises.
