EU leaders gathered for emergency summit on Thursday in Brussels to discuss situation in Libya.

Arriving at the summit, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said the EU should show unity and political will to urge Muammar Gadaffi to step down, BBC reports.

EU leaders will in a joint declaration tell Gaddafi that he must step down and pledge to help build a new post-war Libya, says the euobserver website.

David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy sent a joint letter to European Council head Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday saying Gaddafi should end up in a jail cell in the Hague.

Yesterday France announced it will be the first state to recognize the rebel Libyan National Council as the country’s legitimate representative, adding it will send an ambassador to Benghazi and receive a Libyan envoy in Paris.

A wave of unrest continues in Libya since February. The demonstrators protest against leader Muammar Gaddafi who has been in power for more than 40 years. Gaddafi’s opponents seized many cities in the eastern part of the country. Clashes between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces continue.

Four Armenian citizens were evacuated from Libya on February 23.
