House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday introduced a resolution to form a special committee to investigate the January 6 invasion of the Capitol. The draft document was published on the website of the lower house of the US Congress, TASS reported.

According to the proposal of Pelosi, this special committee should include 13 people. Eight of them, including the chairman. The rest of the candidacies are supposed to be coordinated with the leader of the Republican minority in the lower house of Congress, Kevin McCarthy.

The main task of the committee will be to investigate and report on the facts, circumstances, and root causes of an act of domestic terrorism against the US Capitol complex, concerning attempts to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power in the country. Members of this body will also have to analyze the work of American departments in connection with the incident. Among the tasks of the members of the special committee is the identification of hostile foreign operations, which allegedly could become one of the reasons for the invasion of the Capitol.

According to the draft document, the specified special committee will be able to send summons to obtain information of interest. There are no temporary restrictions on the work of this body.

Republican senators blocked the passage of a bill in May to form a bipartisan independent commission to investigate the Capitol invasion. 54 votes were cast for the project, 35 against. However, the support of at least 60 senators was required to pass the procedural vote. The initiative to establish this body was approved by the lower house of Congress on May 19. However, in the upper house, the bill required the support of not only all Democrats but also at least 10 Republicans, who mostly sharply criticized the proposal.
