The founder of the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, has returned to politics as honorary chairman of the association. This was reported by the party's press service.

"Exactly three years ago, I informed society about my decision to distance myself from active political processes. And now, three years later, on my own initiative, in the status of honorary chairman of the party, I am returning to political life," Ivanishvili said at the ongoing congress of the party.

As Ivanishvili explained, he is returning to politics in order to protect the ruling party from possible risks of splitting and corruption in the conditions of defeated opposition."

Ivanishvili entered Georgian politics in 2011. The Georgian Dream party he founded won the 2012 parliamentary elections and came to power in the country. Ivanishvili served as prime minister until 2013 and as party chairman until 2021, after which he announced his retirement from politics.
