The U.S. Treasury Department said Tuesday that the United States has imposed sanctions on six senior members of the Palestinian group Hamas.

The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement that the sanctions target the group's representatives abroad, a senior member of Hamas' military wing, and those involved in supporting fundraising efforts for the group and smuggling weapons into Gaza.

“Hamas continues to rely on key officials who appear to play a legitimate, public role in the group, yet facilitate their terrorist activities, represent their interests abroad, and coordinate the transfer of money and goods to Gaza,” said Bradley Smith, Treasury's Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.

Among the sanctioned members is Abd al-Rahman Ismail Abd al-Rahman Ghanimat, a longtime member of Hamas' military wing who is now based in Turkey, the Treasury Department said, accusing him of involvement in numerous attempted and successful terrorist attacks.
