China has ordered its airlines not to take any further deliveries of Boeing jets as part of the tit-for-tat trade war that’s seen US President Donald Trump levy tariffs of as high as 145% on Chinese goods, according to people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports.

Beijing has also requested that Chinese carriers halt any purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from US companies, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing matters that are private.

The orders were placed with the companies after China announced 125% retaliatory tariffs on American goods last week, DW reports.

Those tariffs alone will double the cost of US-made planes and parts, making it impossible for Chinese airlines to buy from Boeing, Bloomberg notes.

Also, Beijing is considering ways to support air carriers that lease Boeing planes and face higher costs. According to Aviation Flights Group, about ten Boeing 737 Max aircraft are set to enter the fleet of Chinese airlines.

Chinese air carriers may still accept some of them because the documents for them were issued before the Chinese tariffs took effect, the source told Bloomberg.
