US President Donald Trump would like to bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict to a long-term solution in which 5,000 people are not killed every week on both sides of the conflict, US Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with Fox News television.

When asked where Russia and Ukraine are in the negotiations, Vance said that “the first and necessary step to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict is to get each of them to come forward with a peace proposal.”

"And that did happen. The Ukrainians said, 'This is what we want.' The Russians said, ‘This is what we want,’ and now the job of diplomacy is to try to somehow bring these two sides together. Because there is a very big gap between what the Russians want and what the Ukrainians want," the US vice-president said.

According to him, many people in Europe will say that they don't always agree with Donald Trump's statements and actions, but he is the only one who could get a peace agreement from both sides.

"Because these guys weren't even talking - not to each other or anybody else. They were just fighting. That's all it was. So we took the first step. We've drafted a peace proposal and we've published it, and we're going to work very hard over the next 100 days to try to bring these guys together," Vance added.
